Decluttering the bathroom vanity often reveals forgotten bottles of nail polish that sit untouched for years. While it might seem easier to throw them away, old polish is considered hazardous household waste that requires special disposal. Instead of adding to a landfill, crafters can repurpose these products to create unique decorations, specifically by transforming wire into faux plants.

What you need for the project

Turning a bottle of old color into a miniature bouquet requires a few basic craft supplies. The core materials include green nail polish, floral wire, floral foam, and a container for the arrangement. A pack of nine Yishang Two-Inch Mini Terracotta Clay Pots typically costs around $7, while a three-pack of Flofare Floral Foam Blocks is available for about $7. For a more durable base, a pack of Inspirelle 20-Gauge Aluminum Craft Wire provides 20 different colors and costs roughly $20.

Scissors are necessary to cut the wire into leaf shapes, and a small block of floral foam serves as the base for the arrangement. To disguise the foam inside the pot, some crafters use MagicWater Supply Crinkle Cut Paper. The process begins by shaping the wire into loops that resemble leaves, twisting the wire to create stems, and repeating this pattern to build a cluster of foliage.

The painting process

After applying the polish, the wire sections must dry for one to two hours before they can be handled. During this time, the florist foam is prepared by tracing the bottom of the pot onto a block and cutting out the shape to fit inside. Once the paint has cured, the wire stems are inserted into the foam block, which is then placed inside the pot and covered with the crinkled paper.

Customizing the arrangement

Crafters are not limited to green foliage when using this technique. The same method works with pink or red polish to create plants with colorful leaves, such as those resembling coleus or rex begonias. By switching out the wire color, different hues can be achieved to match the nail polish bottle.
