Repurpose Old Nail Polish into Colorful Glass Jar Lanterns

Old nail polish can find new life as a creative home decor project. Cleaning out bathroom drawers often reveals unused bottles, including colors that no longer fit personal style. These extras can be transformed into dazzling lanterns using a simple marbling technique.
Preparing the Glass Jar
Clean a glass jar thoroughly and apply tape around the mouth to contain the polish to the exterior. Optional: tape the bottom for easier yarn attachment later. Use an old bowl or single-use container for mixing, filling it with warm water to prevent the polish from hardening immediately.
Shake and open all nail polish bottles beforehand. Gently drizzle colors into the water one at a time. The polish will float, allowing you to create swirls and patterns using a toothpick or cotton swab. Work quickly before the liquid sets, as the marbled effect depends on timing and temperature.
Creating the Marbled Design
Transfer the design to the jar by carefully rolling it along the water’s surface. Alternatively, dip the jar partially or at an angle. A cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover can erase sections for custom designs. Allow the jar to dry completely after transferring.
For handles, two options exist. A wire handle involves wrapping a piece under the jar’s lip and shaping another into a hook. A yarn handle requires measuring a long strand, cutting 12 more of equal length, and braiding them into a rope with fringes. Wrap and glue additional yarn around the jar’s mouth, securing the rope’s ends to the sides. Both methods provide sturdy attachment points for hanging.
The marbling technique, popular on social media for nail art and other surfaces, offers a versatile approach to upcycling. Beyond jars, it applies to watercolor paper, mini pumpkins, and jewelry dishes. Adding a battery-operated candle creates a functional, vintage-inspired lantern. This method works best with newer nail polish, though older bottles can be repurposed with proper disposal.
