Vintage Mason jars highly prized by collectors
Mason jars can be a valuable thrift store find, particularly certain vintage and antique jars. The 1800s Hero Cross jar is one such example, featuring the words “Mason’s Patent” and a Maltese cross-like design.
These jars come in colors like amber and aqua blue, with the cross emblem specifically known as the Hero’s Cross, designed for the Hero Fruit Jar Company. The company’s earliest documents date back to 1856, and the cross first appeared on jars as early as 1882.
The Hero Cross jars were hand-blown, leaving specific marks on the glass, including air bubbles and a hand-finished upper edge. Given their limited production timeline over a century ago, finding an intact, authentic jar is rare.
The jars’ production timeline is notable, with the company adding their initials to the arms of the cross in 1884. This means that jars can be found with and without the initials, affecting their value and authenticity.
When shopping for vintage Hero Cross Mason jars, it is essential to check for reproduction pieces by examining the seams on the jar. Authentic jars will have seams that do not reach the lip, and the company’s initials within the body of the cross can help determine the age.

Condition also plays a significant role in the jar’s value. Look for jars without cracks or large chips, and check for clouding of the glass, which can be caused by exposure to high heat or harsh chemicals.
The value of these jars can be substantial, with a dark amber glass Hero’s Cross jar with lid selling on eBay for $200. A small aqua blue jar with lid sold for $125, and a group of blue jars, some without lids, sold for $235.
In practice, finding one of these rare jars can be a significant discovery for collectors and enthusiasts, given their historical significance and the challenge of verifying their authenticity.
As with any vintage or antique item, the value of Hero Cross Mason jars is closely tied to their condition, rarity, and demand. For those willing to search and verify the authenticity of these jars, the reward can be a unique and valuable addition to their collection.
