Weeds rely on sunlight to reach their buried seeds.

Weeds, like all plants, need photosynthesis to thrive, especially annual weeds that rely on sunlight to reach their buried seeds. Blocking sunlight can be an effective way to prevent weed growth, and there are several methods to do so.

Mulching is one way to block light from weed seeds, and using natural products like wood chips, pine needles, or ground leaves can be an attractive solution. However, the size of the mulching material matters, as chunky wood chips can let more light in, while smaller bark chips or nuggets can be more effective.

Organic Mulching Methods

Finer materials like straw or ground leaves can be spread about 2-inches thick, while larger materials should be applied about 4-inches thick. Cardboard layers or thick layers of newspaper can also smother existing weeds and prevent sunlight from signaling new weed seeds to sprout.

These biodegradable materials add needed carbon to the soil as they break down, and can be made more effective by adding decorative mulch on top. It is also important to overlap the cardboard or newspaper layers by several inches to prevent stubborn weeds from growing through the gaps.

Inorganic Mulching Methods

Inorganic mulches, such as black plastic or synthetic mulches, can also be used to block light and suppress weeds. These manmade mulches can be used independently or under other materials like gravel or sand, and can be covered with additional mulching material like wood chips.

Another way to block sunlight is to harness the natural power of plants. Letting your lawn grow a little longer than usual can help shade the soil beneath, reducing weed growth. Setting your mower blade to at least 2 inches and mowing less often can also help.

Groundcover and Shade

Groundcover can also be used to suppress weeds by blocking sunlight and smothering young weeds. Types like moss phlox or northern maidenhair fern can be effective in different environments, and can be used in combination with other methods like mulching.

Shrubs and tall perennials can also be used to shade out weeds, especially on the outer edges of lawns. By setting leafy plants close together, you can block light from the bare soil below, preventing weeds from growing. This method can be especially effective when used in combination with other sunlight-blocking solutions.
