Nestled in Topanga Canyon, near Los Angeles, a 1970s geodesic dome within a secluded compound holds significance in the city’s contemporary art history. During Frieze Week 2024, it showcased previously unseen drawings by local artist Nick Taggart. The property, located at 21658 Encina Road, is now listed for $2.4 million, blending architectural uniqueness and artistic legacy.

A Private Park in the Post Office Tract

The Encina Road property is nestled in the desirable Post Office Tract of Topanga, resembling a secluded park more than a typical home address. Over 30 mature oak trees form a canopy, while a seasonal creek, footbridges, and stone pathways connect the various buildings, and decks, gardens, and fruit trees enhance the surroundings, with secluded gathering spaces among the trees.

The compound dates back to 1935. Its identity has developed over several generations. At its center is a restored rustic residence that retains its original character alongside considered updates. Windows frame views of the surrounding greenery. A renovated kitchen features quartzite countertops and high-end appliances, adding a contemporary touch while keeping the home connected to its canyon setting.

A Compound of Unconventional Structures

Several structures complement the main house, lending the property its unique charm. A studio cottage features high ceilings, a private bathroom, and outdoor shower, ideal for guests or creative pursuits. A geodesic dome boasts a kitchenette, bathroom, and wraparound deck, and a barn, tack room, and corral add to the property’s diverse uses.

The dome’s connection to the Los Angeles art scene is what makes the property unusual. In February 2024, it hosted the exhibition Nick Taggart: Art School Portraits from 1974, presented by Gallucci Tull. The show was part of the Encina Artist Residency, an independent program by Los Angeles artist and curator Dani Tull. By April 2024, six artists had been welcomed to live and work on the property without charge. In exchange, they contributed an artwork to the owners’ collection.

The property also has a Hollywood connection. It was purchased in 2022 by Andrew Guest, a television writer and producer known for 30 Rock, Community, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Guest is also the co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer of Marvel’s Wonder Man.
