A new boutique hotel has opened in Austin’s historic Bouldin Creek neighborhood. The Inn at Green Pastures sits on a five-acre estate shaded by 220 heritage oak trees, adding a modern twist to a site with roots dating back to 1895. This property has long been a cherished part of Austin’s history, evolving from a modest farmhouse into a beloved restaurant and gathering place in 1946. The Inn at Green Pastures continues this legacy, offering a fresh destination that honors its past while adopting contemporary hospitality.

The hotel is part of a larger restoration project led by architecture firm Clayton Korte. They first transformed the original farmhouse into Mattie’s, a restaurant and event space. Now, the 63-room hotel expands the property’s offerings while preserving its history. This project marks the second phase of a long-term master plan, which began with the restoration of the farmhouse and now includes the addition of the hotel, ensuring the estate’s continued relevance in Austin’s changing market.

A Design That Blends Old and New

The three-story, L-shaped building is designed to complement, not compete with, its surroundings. Underground parking keeps the focus on the gardens and trees, while large roof overhangs made from steel and wood provide shade from Austin’s sun. These overhangs not only protect the building but also echo the natural lines of the surrounding oak trees, creating a seamless integration with the environment. The use of durable exterior materials ensures the structure’s longevity while maintaining a refined appearance that respects the historic estate.

Inside, the design draws inspiration from the natural environment. Deep greens and rich browns dominate, paired with floral wallcoverings, pinstripe upholstery, and custom white oak millwork. The result is a space that feels both refined and welcoming. High ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows flood the interiors with natural light, enhancing the connection to the outdoors. Plush seating and embroidered drapery add layers of comfort, while clean architectural lines ensure the spaces remain elegant and uncluttered.

A Destination for Guests and Locals Alike

The hotel‘s all-day restaurant and bar, Henry’s, is a standout feature. It combines the same forest green tones and floral accents found throughout the hotel, creating a polished yet inviting atmosphere. Henry’s serves as a hub for both hotel guests and locals, offering a menu that reflects the property’s heritage while incorporating modern culinary trends. The tailored pinstripe furnishings and distinctive wallcoverings make it a visually striking space that encourages lingering.

The lounge, bar, and casual dining areas overlook a private pool courtyard, encouraging guests to socialize and relax. This extends the social character that Green Pastures has been known for since its days as a restaurant and gathering place. The courtyard itself is a tranquil oasis, surrounded by lush landscaping and shaded by the estate’s towering oaks. West-facing guest areas open directly onto this space, providing seamless indoor-outdoor flow and stunning views of the grounds.

A Peaceful Escape in the Heart of Austin

Despite its proximity to Austin‘s cultural and shopping districts, the hotel offers a surprisingly peaceful experience. The extensive oak canopy, landscaped grounds, and even the resident peacocks contribute to a sense of tranquility. The peacocks, a nod to the property’s history, roam freely, adding a touch of whimsy to the serene setting. The careful preservation of the environment, including the protection of over 200 heritage trees, ensures that the estate remains a green haven in the midst of the city.

The Inn at Green Pastures successfully blends historic preservation with contemporary design. By respecting the estate’s past while introducing new spaces, Clayton Korte has created a boutique hotel that gives this Austin landmark a lively future. From its thoughtful architecture to its inviting interiors, the hotel embodies the spirit of Green Pastures, offering a unique retreat that honors its history while catering to modern tastes. Whether for a special occasion, a casual meal, or a restful stay, The Inn at Green Pastures invites visitors to experience a piece of Austin’s heritage in a beautifully reimagined setting.
