A Sydney courtyard has been transformed into a Modern Mediterranean garden, blending Australian native plants with Mediterranean finishes. Noble Architecture redesigned the space, focusing on reclaimed materials and soft curves. This project, nestled in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, showcases how thoughtful design can turn an underutilized space into a lively, functional extension of the home. The courtyard’s new identity is a sign of the firm’s ability to harmonize diverse elements, creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious.

From Grey to Green: A Courtyard Reborn

The original courtyard was grey and cramped, with an awkward layout. Despite its north-facing position, it lacked usable areas for relaxing or entertaining. The redesign aimed to create a welcoming extension of the home. Before the transformation, the courtyard felt disconnected from the house, serving more as a neglected corner than a livable space. Its disjointed layout made the area seem smaller than it actually was, with no clear focal points or defined zones for activities. This lack of structure discouraged outdoor use, leaving the courtyard underutilized despite its favorable orientation.

By rethinking the space, Noble Architecture has crafted distinct zones for gathering, dining, and unwinding. Reclaimed pavers, laid diagonally, expand the visual width, while native planting adds softness and color. The diagonal paving not only enhances the perception of space but also ensures that the courtyard’s original character is preserved. Surrounding the pavers, a mix of mature trees, established hedges, and native plants creates a lush, textured environment that evolves with the seasons. These elements work together to define separate areas for different activities, making the courtyard a versatile outdoor living space.

Curves and Greenery Define the Space

Gentle rendered walls guide movement, leading visitors to built-in seating. Corten steel edging separates planting areas, and climbing vines will add greenery over time. A custom banquette offers a comfortable gathering spot under the tree canopy. The walls’ soft curves contrast with the straight lines of the paving, creating a fluid, organic flow that encourages exploration. Corten steel edging provides a modern, rusted aesthetic that complements the Mediterranean finishes, while the climbing vines, including creeping figs and native Bower Vine, will gradually cover walls and trellises, adding depth and a sense of maturity to the garden. The banquette, nestled under the canopy of established trees, becomes a secluded retreat, perfect for intimate conversations or quiet reflection.

The courtyard’s original lion-head fountain has been restored, becoming a focal point. Its gentle water sound softens city noise, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere. Vintage stone friezes add historical depth, blending old and new elements. The fountain’s restoration not only preserves a piece of the courtyard’s history but also introduces a soothing auditory element that masks urban sounds. The vintage stone friezes, repurposed and integrated into the planting beds, serve as a bridge between the past and present, enriching the space with a sense of continuity and timelessness.

Sustainable Features and Thoughtful Details

An outdoor kitchen at the rear features locally sourced hemp bricks, reducing embodied carbon. Concealed storage keeps the area functional and clutter-free. Solar lighting extends usability into the evening. The outdoor kitchen is a masterclass in sustainable design, with hemp bricks comprising 45 to 50 percent of the material, significantly lowering the carbon footprint compared to traditional bricks. The solar-cured bricks are not only environmentally friendly but also durable and aesthetically pleasing. Concealed storage solutions, such as the discreetly hidden gas bottle, ensure that the space remains tidy and focused on its primary purpose: entertaining. Solar lighting, integrated seamlessly into the design, provides ambient illumination after dark, making the courtyard a welcoming space at any hour.
