Iconic Spanish Nightclub Transformed Into Pure Sound Study

Spanish design firm Clap Studio has transformed a room inside the iconic Valencia nightclub SPOOK into a study in pure sound. The 1,500-square-foot space, completed earlier this year, features spiky pyramid forms that extend the ceiling, pillars, and walls, some made of dark gray concrete and others crafted from polyurethane foam, doubling as acoustic paneling. These geometric elements are inspired by the concept of “dead rooms,” spaces designed to absorb sound reflections, often found in recording studios and vocal booths. By integrating such forms, Clap Studio achieves both aesthetic and functional excellence, ensuring sound is crisp and contained within the space.

A Temple of Techno Reimagined

SPOOK, part of the legendary La Ruta del Bakalao club circuit, has been a staple of Spain and Europe’s electronic dance scenes since the 1980s and ’90s. Clap Studio’s redesign aimed for architecturally pure sound, crisp and direct like a recording studio. The space is coated in shades of deep blue, from ultramarine surfaces to repainted pale blue speakers, with lighting casting an indigo hue across the dance floor. The choice of blue tones not only pays homage to the nocturnal energy of the club but also enhances the immersive experience, creating a cohesive visual environment that complements the acoustic design.

The club’s 1980s roots are honored with a custom-designed sofa and pouf made from denim fabric scraps, reflecting SPOOK’s approach of preserving its past while evolving for the future. This blend of history and innovation is central to the redesign, ensuring the venue remains relevant for its next era. The denim pieces, with their casual yet durable nature, serve as a tactile reminder of the club’s lively history, inviting patrons to connect with its legacy while enjoying the modern amenities.

Design Details That Define the Space

The monochromatic interior is punctuated by shifts in light, creating striking contrast. The bar emits a crisp ice blue glow, while the dance floor is bathed in indigo. These subtle changes in lighting enhance the immersive experience, drawing focus to the purity of sound. The interplay of light and shadow further accentuates the geometric forms, adding depth and dynamism to the space, especially as the lighting shifts with the rhythm of the music.
