Crafters Create Dove Decor from Egg Cartons for Mantels

Fireplace mantels often serve as the focal point of living rooms and family rooms, yet leaving them bare can make the space feel empty. One budget-friendly way to add warmth and personality is crafting doves from upcycled egg cartons, a project that aligns with the current trend of bringing nature indoors.
Gathering Supplies and Preparing Materials
Besides a leftover cardboard egg carton, most of the needed supplies are likely already in a craft inventory: hot glue, PVA glue, craft wire, and orange yarn. Fine yarn works well, though orange pipe cleaners can substitute. Additional tools include a small flat paintbrush, a mix needle or skewer, needle-nose pliers, white paper, white felt, cotton balls, a circle stencil or small lid, and black beads for the doves’ eyes.
Egg carton crafts rely on sculpting the pliable cardboard similarly to clay. The key to this DIY is separating the paper into thin layers and tearing it for application like paper mache. Clear-drying PVA glue acts as the invisible bond, while hot glue secures the main shapes.

Building the Dove Bodies and Details
To construct each dove, trim and split one egg carton cup to form the head, shaping it into a cone and securing the edges with hot glue. For the body, trim and hot glue two cups together, one slightly smaller than the other. Attach the head to the body at an angle, then cover the surface with thin sheets of peeled egg carton cardboard coated in PVA glue to add realistic contours.
Form the wire into two quirky bird feet using pliers, then cover them with orange yarn, securing the ends with hot glue. Poke holes into the base of the body with a needle or skewer, coat the legs in hot glue, and push them into place. Create a tiny paper cone from a circle of paper, dab it with hot glue, and wrap it in yarn for the beak. Press two black beads onto the head to serve as the eyes.
To feather the dove, tear cotton balls and adhere them to the body using diluted PVA glue, giving the bird a soft, fuzzy appearance. Cut three large felt feathers per wing and attach them along with tail feathers. Alternatively, accordion-fold small squares of white paper, pinch and hot glue one end, then use them for wings and tail.

Styling and Personalizing Your Doves
Once assembled, the doves can be arranged in a line along the mantel or nestled into a basket as a centerpiece. They also work well displayed on a tiered cake stand in the kitchen or dining room alongside seasonal items. Adding a piece of string allows hanging them from a mini faux tree in the entryway as a cheerful greeting for guests. They can even be glued onto long picks and tucked into houseplants, peeking out from the foliage.
Variation options include covering the doves in pastel pink, blue, and yellow cotton craft fluff for spring or adding tiny Santa hats for Christmas. A flock can be personalized to represent family members with scarves in favorite colors. Craft wire can form eyeglasses, and tiny flags made from toothpicks, fabric, and painted paper can be tucked under each wing, emblazoned with names, school logos, or sports teams. The possibilities are limited only by imagination.
