Behr's 2027 Color of the Year is a Deep Green

Behr’s 2027 Color of the Year, Grounded, is a green shade that sits between moss and olive, with brown undertones giving it an earthier character. This color is not revolutionary, but it makes a case for exploring new territory in interiors.

The shade’s responsiveness to light was intentional, with the company’s Color Lab working through dozens of formulations to arrive at Grounded.

Kayla Kratz, head of color at Behr, says of Grounded’s shifting character, “In clear morning light, its mossy green feels freshest. Through the middle of the day, the olive becomes more pronounced; by evening, the brown undertones surface and the room feels deeper, warmer and more enveloping.”

Grounded’s Unique Character

Behr’s Color Lab adjusted the relationship between green and brown until each component played a distinct role, with the moss keeping the color feeling alive, the olive carrying the warmth, and the brown adding depth without pulling the shade too far away from green.

Kratz explains that the result reflects a larger shift toward richer earth tones, tactile materials, and spaces that feel connected to the natural world.

Nature’s Influence

Nature itself offered a reference point for how those colors and materials could coexist, with Kratz saying, “Beneath a tree canopy, green exists beside bark, soil, and shadow; it changes with the light, yet everything still feels connected.”

Grounded translates that relationship into a single color—the vitality of moss, the warmth of olive, and an earthy depth underneath.

This is also a departure from the idea that restorative interiors need to retreat entirely into pale neutrals, with Behr seeing comfort becoming “warmer, earthier and more expressive” in 2027.

Deeper color and natural materials are expected to bring more character to spaces designed for rest, with Grounded anchoring the brand’s broader 2027 Color Trends Palette.

The palette extends the nature-driven approach through warm neutrals, layered greens, muted pinks and clay tones, soft blues, and deeper shades such as Nightfall, Sarsaparilla, Smokey Claret, and Mozart.

Seven colors from Behr’s archive—Coastal Beige, Wheat Grass, Environmental, Denim Light, Smokey Claret, Sarsaparilla, and Mozart—return to the palette as well, offering a range of options for those looking to incorporate the 2027 Color of the Year into their designs.
