Tatiana Tsvetkov’s residence is in Clayton, California.

Interior designer Tatiana Tsvetkov views a home as more than just an aesthetically pleasing environment—it should narrate a personal history. Her residence in Clayton, California, exemplifies this philosophy, merging European influences, California’s Spanish architectural roots, and cherished artifacts gathered worldwide.

The single-story ranch-style dwelling, reflective of 1970s American design, serves as the living space for Tsvetkov, her five-member family, and their two French bulldogs. The 232 m² property includes five bedrooms, three bathrooms, an open-concept kitchen, a living area, and a dedicated library—ample room for daily family activities.

A Bold Approach to Color

The home’s distinctive character stems from Tsvetkov’s lively color palette. After relocating to California, she longed for the deep hues and tactile textures she had encountered elsewhere. Rather than conforming to the muted tones prevalent in local homes, she crafted a residence that honors her multicultural background while allowing for creative freedom. Each space reflects her vision, maintaining a unique visual identity.

The master bedroom combines her preferred blue with golden-hued wallpaper, blending cool and warm tones harmoniously. Meanwhile, the library stands out with its bold canary yellow, intended to mimic the brightness of natural sunlight. The room’s expansive windows further enhance this connection to the outdoors.

The kitchen adopts a contrasting strategy, featuring sleek black cabinetry against a green natural-stone island. The dining area merges turquoise and purple accents, while the living room incorporates striking terracotta wallpaper for an unexpected twist.

The children’s bedrooms also showcase expressive design. Her son’s room blends blue and green tones with ikat-patterned wallpaper, achieving a mature yet playful atmosphere. Her daughter’s space centers on a deeply personal detail: a ceiling adorned with authentic gold leaf. Tsvetkov meticulously applied roughly 3,500 tiny pieces during her pregnancy’s final stages, creating a heartfelt tribute to her anticipated arrival.

Materials, Memorabilia, and Narratives

Beyond color, the home’s materials define its character. Textured plaster, patterned wallpaper, natural stone, and glass introduce visual contrast, while American walnut flooring spans nearly the entire house. Remarkably, the wood has endured California’s intense sunlight and the wear of three children, two dogs, and frequent visitors.

Vintage glass lighting fixtures and ornate chandeliers lend historical depth to the interiors, while mirrors serve dual purposes, beyond decoration. A standout piece, repurposed from an antique window of a Spanish palace, reinforces the home’s cultural fusion. Nearby, a mirror sourced from a Moroccan bazaar complements the Moroccan zellige tiles beneath.

Numerous furnishings and decor items have journeyed extensively to reach their current home. Artworks, photographs, lighting, and vintage vases acquired from Parisian flea markets evoke memories of past residences and experiences.

Designing her own home allowed Tsvetkov to experiment with ideas she might otherwise have hesitated to propose to clients, such as wallpaper in the powder room or wooden floors in the kitchen. This hands-on experience has bolstered her confidence in pursuing unconventional design choices and observing their real-world performance.
