Valspar has selected Cottage Door 8004-38E as its 2027 Color of the Year, a mid-tone blue that the company says strikes a balance between warm and cool undertones. The shade offers more personality than traditional neutrals while maintaining enough versatility to work across a range of spaces and finishes.

A Colorful Neutral

The designation as a “colorful neutral” represents Cottage Door’s defining characteristic. It is neither an airy pastel nor a dramatic navy, sitting somewhere in between those extremes. That positioning gives the color enough presence to anchor a room while remaining subdued enough to pair with different materials and existing palettes.

“Cottage Door captures blue’s natural sense of security and trust while serving as a colorful new neutral that layers effortlessly into the home,” said Sue Kim, Valspar’s director of color marketing. “It creates spaces that feel balanced, comforting and inviting.”

Valspar pairs the blue with two supporting shades: Moon Shot 8005-2B, a warm gray, and Apricot Blush 8003-8A, a muted creamy pink. Light wood tones add another layer of warmth to the combination, creating a palette that reads as soft without crossing into overly sweet territory.

Responding to a Shift in Taste

The selection reflects a broader movement toward interiors that feel personal and lived-in rather than polished to perfection. Valspar describes Cottage Door as a response to what it sees as growing consumer desire for comfort and authenticity in home design.
