Hidden Laundry Room Keeps Clutter Out Sight

Megan Moncrief’s laundry-mudroom in her St. Petersburg, Florida, home was in dire need of renovation when she moved in with her family in 2020. The room, which is the primary entry point for the family, was 9 feet by 12 feet and lacked storage and functionality.

Moncrief’s initial priorities for the renovation were storage, moody black paint, and built-in dog bowls to minimize mess. However, after living with the renovation for a few years, she noticed some flaws, including the lack of concealment for items like laundry detergent and shoes due to the open shelves.

A leak in the bathroom led to the discovery of black mold under the floors, which prompted a more extensive renovation. Moncrief decided to run a water line to a pot filler over the dogs’ drinking bowl and re-do the cabinetry while the contractor was already working on the space.

The renovation process allowed Moncrief to address the issues with the original design and create a more functional space. She installed hampers underneath the washer and dryer to keep dirty clothes organized and added a second rod for drying items, which is easily accessible with a reaching hook.

Moncrief chose to use Svelte Sage by Sherwin-Williams for the paint color and Monument and Basilica Limestone Floor Tile from Zia Tile for the flooring. The washer and dryer are from LG, and the ceiling light is from RH. The pot filler is from Kingston Brass.

She relocated the built-in dog bowls to a drawer, and added side-by-side pull-outs for recycling and dog food above. This design choice optimized the use of space and created a more efficient layout.

Moncrief used drawers for shoe storage, which has proven to be more practical than the original shoe shelves. The drawers are divided into two sections, one for kids and one for adults, and feature grates to improve airflow.

Within the cabinets, Moncrief uses various storage containers, including little baskets, risers, and other containers. She also utilizes a plate rack to hold hand towels and glass jars for storing items like dryer sheets or puppy food.

Some of her favorite storage solutions include the Ou Grid Basket with Bamboo Lid Beige, Storage Basket Foldable Organizer Bin, and Foldable Bed Sheets Set Organizers. These products help keep the space organized and clutter-free.

The laundry-mudroom has become the hardest-working space in Moncrief’s house, and the renovation has made a significant difference in the family’s daily life. With its improved functionality and storage, the room is now a valuable asset to the household.

Moncrief’s family can now enjoy a more organized and efficient space.
