2026 World Cup set to break records

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest edition in the competition’s 96-year history, with more teams, matches, and host nations than ever before.

The number of teams went from 32 to 48, which is a 50% rise. The match count rose from 64 to 104. Analysts estimate the event could generate between $40 billion and $80 billion in global economic activity.

Three nations—the United States, Mexico, and Canada—are co-hosting for the first time. This is the first time in the tournament’s history that three countries have done this.

FIFA expanded to three hosts to handle the logistics of a 48-team tournament. Sharing the load also allows access to three distinct markets and economies.

The opening match began on June 11, 2026, at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where Mexico played South Africa.

Early estimates suggested roughly 6.5 million total attendees, including 2.6 million international visitors. U.S. officials anticipated 1.24 million foreign fans, with many staying about 12 days and attending two matches on average. However, reports noted gaps between forecasts and actual turnout due to high ticket prices and travel challenges.

This edition is breaking multiple records. It features the largest field, the most matches, and the longest duration. The champion’s prize money reaches $50 million, up from the previous cycle. Resale markets have seen single tickets exceed $32,000.

FIFA’s commercial revenue for 2023–2026 is projected to surpass $11–13 billion. Whether attendance and spending meet initial predictions remains uncertain as the event continues.

Tickets are available through FIFA’s official channels, including the Last-Minute Sales Phase and the Resale/Exchange Marketplace. All valid entries are digital via the FWC26 Mobile Tickets app—no printed or emailed versions are accepted.

U.S. authorities have warned about scams from fake ticket sites impersonating FIFA’s branding.

The only safe option is FIFA’s official portal or licensed resale partners.

This World Cup stands apart as the first with three hosts, the first with 48 teams, and the first to stretch across so many cities and matches.
